ANY LEFT HANDED PLAYERS OUT THERE?
We have had many inquiries over the years from players who are left handed and who would love to play left handed - without the bell being in the way of the left hand and without the second valve slide being in the way of the right hand. Well, one answer is a true, mirror image, left handed trumpet. Here's a quick look at the first one to come out of our shop!
Final assembly supervisor and Monette webmaster Toshihiro Kosaka played the first few notes for us today, and given how unusual the horn looks we couldn't resist a slightly humorous approach with the first few pictures we snapped. We decided to take a picture with Toshi holding both horns at once to make absolutley clear that this horn is not a product of Photoshop!
On a more serious note, we do hope that a modern, state-of-the-art, left handed trumpet might fill a need for some players. With this first prototype, we hope more will be explored and written about this subject as we work with a few friends to evaluate the value of this concept. Perhaps our old teacher and friend, the late Eloise Ristad, is smiling down on this project? We sure hope so!
As always, your comments or questions are welcome: stc@monette.net

DAVE MONETTE VISITS HIS HOMETOWN OF KALAMAZOO, MICHIGAN FOR CLINICS AT
TWO LOCAL SCHOOLS
Dave Monette recently traveled to his hometown of Kalamazoo Michigan,
where he held an evening clinic for Dr. Steve Jones and his students at
Western Michigan University. WMUs other trumpet professor, Scott
Thornburg, and long-time Monette trumpet client Dan McCarthy also
attended. All those in attendance, including Dave, had a memorable evening.
Dave also visited the high school he attended (class of E4), Portage
Northern, located in the nearby suburb of Portage, Michigan. Band
director David Papenhagens trumpet section and many of the low brass
players use Monette mouthpieces. Dave worked one on one with the brass
players to help fine-tune their performance, and then worked with the
entire wind ensemble during their morning rehearsal. The students were
enthusiastic and very responsive to the body use and breath techniques
Dave shared with them.
As this is being written, the wind ensemble from PNHS is traveling to
New York City to be featured in a Carnegie Hall concert as part of the
National Band Festival. We hope the band has a great time in New York!
Thanks to Dr. Steve Jones, Professor Scott Thornburg, PNHS band director
David Papenhagen and all the students at both schools for hosting and
entertaining Dave on his visit.

MONETTE DECORATED PRESENTATION FIELD
TRUMPET DELIVERED TO BAA's TOM DAY!
Marine Bugler Tom Day, the founder of Bugles Across America, received his decorated presentation Monette Field Trumpet today in time for Veteran's Day activities in the Chicago area where he lives. Tom is the only living American to have served in all five branches of the U.S. military, and his work with BAA is legendary.
The goal in building this instrument was to produce the best sounding and playing field trumpet possible, and to have the instrument visually as well as musically celebrate America's veterans and their families. More details and pictures to follow very soon in our Fall 2007 online newsletter.

FINGRBUTTON CONTEST WINNERS!

Thanks to the 870 of you who entered our raffle for a free set of finger buttons or a free Monette mouthpiece. Mark Rapp is the finger button winner! Mark plays an AJNA Bb, and is very active on the jazz scene in New York City. Downbeat magazine included him in their June 2007 "Trumpet" issue as one of their top 25 Emerging Artists. Mark's favorite fingerbuttons are the "Complex Mosaic" buttons we made for Patrick Hession, and we will make him a set similar to these. Congratulations Mark!
Michael Paul is the winner of the free mouthpiece. He is a working musician who plays on cruise ships. We look forward to getting him his choice of whatever size Monette mouthpiece he would like. Congratulations Michael!
Tami Dean, our co-worker who helps us build the elaborate decorated presentation instruments we build picked the winners from the 870 entries. Thanks for the help, Tami! Watch for the latest creation we have made with Tami coming soon to our online Fall 2007 Newsletter.

"BLAST" STAR ADAM RAPA INSPIRES A NEW MONETTE TRUMPET MODEL AND TWO NEW MOUTHPIECES!
Adam Rapa is well known as the star of the Tony and Emmy Award winning
Broadway show, "Blast!" He has performed over one thousand shows with
the company thus far, both on a U.S. National tour and in Japan. Adam has
been a Monette mouthpiece client for years, but last year when he was asked to be a featured soloist for the 2007 National Trumpet Competition in Washington D.C., he decided it was time to order his first Monette instrument - hopefully to be delivered in time for that performance.
In working with Adam, we found he sounded fantastic on our MF PRANA for his lead playing, but he also sounded great on the larger and heavier PRANA 3 Bb for his small group jazz and classical work. Hearing Adam play the two horns back to back, Dave decided to make him a new horn... one with the richness and density of the heavier PRANA 3, but with the extra "sparkle" and "zip" on the edges of the sound that Maynards horn is known for.
Adam picked up his new horn on a Tuesday afternoon, and flew out the next day for the National Trumpet Competition performance! By all accounts he wowed the audience with his virtuosity and command of the music. One of the pieces he played was his own 7/8 arrangement of the "Flight of the Bumble Bee" (Please see video clip sample below).
Adam's lead mouthpiece is actually a new "SLAP" model Dave designed for Adam about a year ago. When Dave Monette played Adam's new PRANA "SLAP" STC-2 weight lead mouthpiece on Adam's new horn just prior to delivery, he found it had the easiest double C of any large bell Monette horn and mouthpiece configuration he had ever played! Dave also came up with a new small group jazz and classical PRANA "SLAP" STC-3 weight mouthpiece for Adam, which has a huge sound in the middle and low register but still retains some fire above the staff. You can hear Adam play both these new mouthpieces plus a FLUMPET cup trumpet mouthpiece in the third video clip below.
We hope you enjoy the video clips posted here of Adam on the new equipment. Thanks for the inspiration for the new models, Adam!

NEW PRANA
C TRUMPETS AND AN ALL-STAR CONCERT AT OUR SHOP!
When Urban and Joakim Agnas decided to come over from Stockholm and pick up their "NEXT GENERATION" PRANA LT and XLT C trumpets, word of their trip spread quickly!
Charlie and Martha Schlueter were the first ones to decide to join the party, then within a day or so Mike Thompson and his co-worker Pablo from Thompson Music bought their tickets. Then we realized that we couldn't have a real party without Ron Miles and Patrick Hession in attendance, and they signed up for the event!
Adam Rapa from Seattle had never played a Monette trumpet in performance before, and with his first horn about to be delivered he decided what better time to come sit in?
Dave Bamonte and Jeff Work from the Oregon Symphony joined Charlie and Mike Thompson for some chamber pieces and an orchestral demonstration or two for the audience of about 100. Ron Miles topped off the evening with some spectacular small group jazz with the Gray Hobbs Trio, with Urban and Adam Rapa sitting in. On the break between sets, Jeff Work treated us to his "Tijuana Brass" rendition of the posthorn solo from Mahler 3, and just about brought the house down!
It must have been time for a party and a fantastic concert, because that is what we got! More on this spontaneous combustion of great players at our shop will be posted soon as we get our all-new Winter 2007 Online Newsletter finished up... stay tuned for more pictures and some great video clips too!

NEW MANNY LAUREANO AND DAVE BAMONTE ORCHESTRAL VIDEO CLIPS ARE ON THE WAY!
We called Manny Laureano a few weeks ago to tell him we had a few new shop sample lightweight C trumpets ready to play-test, and he graciously got on a plane and came out to try them out for us. These new C trumpets have all the latest improvements, including the new valve drilling pattern and all-new valve casings and pistons. With Manny's help, we made back-to-back comparisons of our three lightest C trumpets made with the old style valve casings, and the exact same models with all the new high-tech tooling and design improvements. We really, really like the new horns... and so does Manny!
By popular demand, we will soon be posting our informal video takes of Manny play-testing the various C trumpets, both with the camera up close and also with the camera further away. The results of the different weight instruments recorded at different distances are consistent with what we have experienced for almost 30 years now... and we hope these results are fun and informative for our clients and friends to check out.
In the mean time, here is a short video teaser from Manny's recent visit. Manny was joined by Oregon Symphony trumpeter Dave Bamonte. Among other things, they played some Copland for the camera. Manny is using the all-new PRANA LT C trumpet with his C1-4 S6 'SLAP' mouthpiece, while Dave is using the all-new, mid shank PRANA 1 C and the new C1-1 S1 'SLAP' mouthpiece. Please write us a note and tell us what you think. More video clips and horn comparisons will follow in the coming weeks... stay tuned!

THARA MEMORY... "I'M BACK... I'M BACK!!"
Our long-time client and good friend Thara Memory has just been released from the hospital after an extended stay. Thara has diabetes, and has recently had his left foot and part of this right hand third valve finger amputated.
As anyone who knows Thara would expect, these medical setbacks have not slowed him down one bit!
Thara is a student of Bill Fielder, the legendary trumpet teacher from Rutgers University. Two of Bill's other well known students include Wynton Marsalis and Terence Blanchard. Just like "Prof" (as Professor Fielder is affectionately called by his students) always says, if your air is working, your chops will be fine. Thara had not played for about a month when he visited the shop today, but one would never know it from how he sounded... his air was good, his chops were fine and he sounded GREAT!
Thara will be a featured soloist at the IAJE (International Association of Jazz Educators) convention in New York in January. He will be using his new, "Next Generation" PRANA LTJ Bb, which he just took delivery on during his visit to the shop. We made up a special third valve finger button for Thara, which Thara says we should call the "Memory Facilitator!"
With this special finger button, one can play either second valve or second/third combination easily with just the middle (second valve) finger. As Thara gets used to the finger mechanics of playing with this setup, we will no doubt learn more about how to adapt instruments to the needs of players with diabetes-related challenges. If anyone reading this has any experience or useful suggestions for us, please share your thoughts and send us an E-mail: stc@monette.net

Maynard Ferguson
1928 - 2006
A FEW PERSONAL THOUGHTS FROM DAVE MONETTE...
With Maynards passing, I feel the loss of a friend, teacher, mentor and hero.
I first met Maynard, (a line everyone seems to use as a preface when they start to talk about Maynard) back in 1974. And again, like probably everyone else who may read this, it changed my life forever. For me it not only changed my life, but it directly inspired my lifes work. Countless hours I have spent in my shop, working after hours and often pulling all-nighters working on some new project, while listening to Maynard on the shop stereo loud enough to rattle the walls. And if I lost direction and wasnt sure how to proceed with a new design or idea, I would stop and close my eyes, and Maynards sound would tell me what to do. HIS sound - the vitality and sparkle and glimmer in his eyes you can always hear through his horn - what a lesson that is.
Back in 1974 I got my first lesson in how beautiful a trumpet could sound. Years later, as I got to know Maynard personally, he taught me much more. Every time I had the honor and privilege to hang with Boss, I would get another chapter of the continual and ongoing lesson in how to be a better human being. How to love others without judgment or condition, and how to always see the joy in life - even if the band bus has a flat in North Dakota in the winter out in the middle of nowhere at 3:00 AM. This amazing vitality is almost impossible to realize or maintain for most mortals, but it was second nature to Maynard. Maynards gig in the larger sense was simply to support others, and make them feel better about themselves so they can hopefully do the same someday for others. His unselfish mission touched millions of listeners Eand me too.
I am humbled to be able to say that Maynard was my friend. Maynard directly helped me realize my lifes dream. Im so glad I had the opportunity to tell him that, to show him that through the equipment I build, and to call him my friend. Thank you, Boss.

WYNTON HAS A NEW MOUTHPIECE... THE B2S3 "SLAP!"
Wynton Marsalis just spent two days in the studio last week recording a new small group jazz CD for Blue Note. The new CD will not only show off our very first "Next Generation" PRANA 3 Bb TRUMPET, which is made with our all-new valve casing design, but also his NEW B2S3 "SLAP" MOUTHPIECE. This is Wynton's first mouthpiece change in 20 years!
Dave Monette worked for almost a year on this project, tweeking the computer design and making prototypes. The idea was to come up with an upgrade that is an improvement in every way to our most popular mouthpiece, the B2. This new model is VERY fun to play, and it is now available from our shop directly and from most Monette mouthpiece dealers.
The response to this new model and to all our soon-to-be-announced S-Series (SLAP!) Mouthpieces has been unanimously enthusiastic, not only from jazz players, but from classical and symphonic players as well. More information is coming very soon... watch our main page for the biggest announcement of new trumpet and mouthpiece models in the history of the company!

Minnesota
Orchestra principal trumpet Manny Laureano
just visited our shop, and as usual we got our ears cleaned out
in fine fashion! Manny spent two full days plus in the shop, working
with Dave and the crew fine-tuning mouthpiece cup contours, throat
blends, mouthpiece blank proportions and various other details
using our custom proprietary Monette mouthpiece design software.
The end result
of Manny?s visit is the new C1-4S Version 6 mouthpiece
? made on the all-new prototype mouthpiece blank designed
specifically for use on our new PRANA 1 C trumpet. Manny
took the new mouthpiece home along with our updated shop prototype
PRANA 1 C trumpet. He?ll be playing them together in the
hall with the orchestra later this week. We are looking forward
to getting the ?on the gig? report to see how it all
works under fire. First impressions were excellent. Both the instrument
and mouthpiece were an immediate, obvious improvement over his
previous set up.
Thanks for
